Breakaway Bash Official Rules

General Rules

  • All games are played under USA/Minnesota Hockey rules unless otherwise noted.
  • Only USA Hockey, MSHSL, or Canadian certified officials will be used.
  • A medic/EMT will be present at every venue.
  • The tournament will assume no liability for personal injury to participants, coaches, or spectators during the event.
  • An official roster must be received by the tournament director 45 minutes prior to the start of the first game.
  • Physical Contact/checking will be permitted at the 2000 Boys level and older
  • Slapshots will be permitted at ALL levels
  • Tag-up off sides will be used at ALL levels
  • Each game will consist of 3 minute warm-up, 3 15-minute periods (stop time), 1 minute between peroids.
  • The ice will re-surface following each game at the ALL levels with the exception of the 2000 which will re-surface every 2 periods as long as time permits.
  • Each team will be allowed one (1) 45 second time out.
  • Teams must be ready to play 15 minutes prior to their scheduled game time. Game times will begin prior to the posted whenever possible.
  • When there is a six goal lead the clock will roll over to running time until the lead falls to less than six goals during the third period.
  • Once a team is confirmed for the tournament, there will be no refunds.

Tournament Format

  • Competition format will consist of round-robin play followed by seeded brackets and/or place games.
  • Home teams will be designated on the brackets and pool play schedule and will be asked to wear the white or light colored jersey when possible.
  • Teams will be able to earn up to 2 points per game.
    • 2 Points – Winning team
    • 1 Point – Each team that ends in a tie
    • 0 Points – Losing team
  • There will be no overtime in round robin play.
  • Teams will be seeded based on total points following round-robin play
  • Overtime will be used for all bracket or place games. There will be a 5 minute sudden death running time period. If a tie still remains a 5 player shootout will determine the winning team; followed by a sudden death shootout if needed.
  • Tie breakers for Round Robin Play
    • Head to head competition
    • Total goal differential
    • Least goals allowed
    • Most goals scored
    • Least penalty minutes
    • Coin toss
  • In the event of a multiple team tie, head to head tie breaker will not be used. The tie breaking procedures will begin with goal differential and follow in succession until the teams have been identified.
  • If a team forfeits a game during pool play they are required to forfeit all pool ply games in order to maintain equality in the standings.

Player Eligibility

  • A maximum of 20 players may be rostered for any team.
  • A team’s roster is frozen at the time the roster is turned into the tournament director, 45 minutes prior to the team’s first game. **Goalie exception
  • Each player may only be rostered to one team competing in the 2013 Breakaway Bash.
  • Any eligible protest must occur before the start of the game and must come from the head coach and be presented to the tournament director to be valid. Invalid protests will result in a 5 minute bench major for the challenging team
  • Any ineligible player will be ejected for the remainder of the tournament
  • All teams that knowingly play an ineligible player will receive an automatic 5-0 forfeit for the protested game.

Penalty Guidelines

  • Minor – 2 minutes
  • Major – 5 minutes
  • Misconduct – 10 minutes
  • Game Misconduct – Player will be removed from the remainder of the game and serve and additional one game suspension
  • Fighting – Player is disqualified from the remainder of the tournament
  • Checking from behind will carry a minimum 5 minute major penalty plus a 10 minute misconduct
  • Any penalty deemed serious with an intent to injure will result in a 5 minute major and a tournament disqualification.
  • Any player receiving 4 penalties will be ejected from the remainder of the current game. A player from the offending team will be required to serve the forth penalty. 

All referee decision are final. Protests will not be allowed.
